and creates a space for redefining what freedom means today

WHAT:  CicLAvia – South LA presented by Metro
On Sunday, June 18; between 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., CicLAvia-South LA, presented by Metro, welcomes everyone of all ages and abilities to its’ 46^thcar-free open streets event taking place in South Los Angeles along Vermont Ave, between Exposition Blvd to the north and Century Blvd to the south, for the public to jog, ride, bike, skate, run, walk, skateboard, spectate, and enjoy the 6.2 mile route. 

A highlight of CicLAvia – South LA features Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell's 3^rd Annual Juneteenth Celebration & Resource Fair, a free community event that raises awareness of the historical impact of Juneteenth and creates a space for redefining what freedom means today. This joyous event includes live performances, food trucks, activities, and access to community and county services, and creates a necessary space for celebrating joy and redefining what freedom means today with empowering discussions, performances, and activities. Available resources include on-site record expungement, mental health services, support with tenant protections and more. As we participate together, in South LA, at the 46th CicLAvia open streets event, we are reminded that we are connected in more ways that we can possibly count.”

We have a shared understanding that Angelenos deserve equitable access to enjoy the streets that make up their neighborhoods and to prosper in their communities” said Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell, Second District. “The ability to safely pedal, skate, or walk your way to a free event packed with entertainment, resources, and access to critical on-site county services - like mental health support, record expungement, and tenant/landlord protections – is how we can uplift the significance of Juneteenth while redefining what freedom means today.” 

With Hubs and plenty of activities and programs along the route, CicLAvia-South LA will be both fun and engaging for all to enjoy. Hubs are walking zones (bike dismounts) and meeting points along the route offering additional programming and activities. CicLAvia-South LA will have four hubs: Exposition Park Hub located on Vermont Ave between Exposition Blvd and MLK Jr Blvd; Vermont Slauson Hub located on Vermont between Slauson Ave and Gage Ave; Westmont Hub located on Vermont between Manchester Ave and 92^nd St; and Juneteenth Hub located on Century Ave at Western Ave. Hubs have family-friendly activities, restrooms, free water refilling stations, free basic bike repair, bike parking, and first aid. Free pedicab rides, sponsored by AARP, are available at each information booth. 

Inspired by Bogotá’s weekly ciclovía, CicLAvia has been temporarily closing streets to car traffic and opening them as public parks in Los Angeles since 2010. Now, with more than 275 miles of open streets, these beloved, always free to attend events are a celebration of L.A.’s diverse and vibrant communities. CicLAvia car-free streets connect all of us to the neighborhoods where we live, work, shop, learn, and play. Active participants at CicLAvia use people-powered mobility to navigate public streets in a safe and joyful way. Along the way there is shopping at local businesses, access to cultural and architectural gems, using open streets as spaces to connect with each other, and making a positive impact on the environment by creating a more sustainable and climate resilient city and region. Over the past 13 years CicLAvia has helped communities re-imagine a greener and cleaner Los Angeles, while also promoting equitable transportation options, healthier lifestyles, and closer connections to community. 

Only people-powered vehicles are allowed. No electric scooters, electric skateboards, hoverboards, electric unicycles, motorcycles and other non-people-powered vehicles are allowed at CicLAvia. Class 1 e-bike pedal-assist allowed. Class 2 e-bikes are allowed when throttle is powered off. Class 3 e-bikes are allowed when pedal-assist is powered off. Motorized wheelchairs are allowed. CicLAvia–South LA; Sunday, June 18, 2023; 9:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. – 6.2 miles of open, car-free streets, transforming them into public parks for the day. Jog, ride, bike, skate, run, walk, skateboard, spectate, and enjoy the route for all to enjoy – free of charge. Show up anywhere along the route on Vermont Ave between Exposition Blvd to the north and Century Blvd to the south, and Century Blvd between Vermont Ave and S Van Ness to the west, at any time and have fun!
