CommentsCITYWATCH TODAY—“I thought by now you’d realize,” Don Henley and Glenn Frey admonish in their humongous Eagles hit, “There ain’t no way to hide your lyin eyes.” But that was back in 1975 when folks were actually admonished for lying. Had it been this election year in America, it wouldn’t have mattered.
Time Magazine’s Joel Stein calls 2016 the “year of the lie.” Had the song hit the charts this year, the feminine focus of Henley and Frey’s song would have gotten off scot free now that America is great again. No worries about trying to hide ‘your lyin eyes.’ That’s the legacy of this most dreadful of all American elections.
Of course, as I’m oft reminded, humankind didn’t start telling lies in 2016. But it is, as most of us can best remember, the first time no one seemed to care. There was a time when being lied to broke up relationships. With today’s politicians it seems to be the glue that bonds. And, if understanding the importance of truth is beyond your grasp … or, you believe that a greatness (as in make America great again) is possible without it … the lowering of that bar and the likely ugly consequences … are on you. And, will be paid for by America’s children. Because … for the world and each other … there won’t be a way, America, to hide your lyin eyes.
