HOUSING POLITICS - I was intrigued by a recent article in The Daily Beast with the double-edged title: “Yimbys Could Solve the Affordable Housing Crisis if They Weren’t So Busy Being Trolls.” 

THE EASTSIDER - It’s always seemed to me that pot shops (or Cannabis Dispensaries) have popped up in Northeast LA without notice, and in areas that the community may or may not be aware of in advance.

COMMENTARY - The word “commonwealth,” be it that of the collapsing British Empire or that of the state of Massachusetts, comes from the olde English “common weal” or common good.

RANDOM LENGTHS NEWS - On Jan. 26, Los Angeles City Councilmember Joe Buscaino called for an investigation into the Union Pacific rail thefts calling this a “crisis.”

SOUTH OF THE 10 - Remind me if I’m wrong or not but hasn’t the catch phrase over the past two years been trust the science, trust the professional?

COMMENTARY - The Glendale Water & Power (GWP) folks are back and just as bad as ever. 

MY THOUGHTS - In 2002 I voted for the San Fernando Valley to secede from the City of Los Angeles.  The gentleman who really sparked the movement, passed away Tuesday.

PLANNING WATCH -  Real estate is a highly profitable business, especially when its income comes from rents.

SOUTH OF THE 10 - Los Angeles County has released fundraising documents for the upcoming Sheriff’s race with Alex Villanueva outraising his challengers by a 9-1 margin.

THE VIEW FROM HERE - Remember Worldcom?  A lot of people don’t. It was like Enron and Sears.

THE EASTSIDER - After the recent pictures of our Governor, our Mayor, and San Francisco’s Mayor maskless at the Rams/49ers game, I saw one reason people don’t use masks.

SOUTH OF THE 10 - Inglewood Unified School District is continuing to yield press coverage as documents detail a lawsuit filed by a previous basketball coach is settled against a principal, who hasn’t been seen on campus since.

HOMELESS POLITICS - The 2022 Homeless count is especially important to me because the Homeless Crisis affects everyone in our County.

SOUTH OF THE 10 - Online fashion retailer Fashion Nova, LLC will be prohibited from suppressing customer reviews of its products and required to pay $4.2 million to settle Federal Trade Commission allegations that the company blocked negative reviews of its products from being posted to its website.

LABOR WATCH - If you’re a Texan with a disability, and you need someone to help you fill out your ballot in a polling place (it’s gotten more complicated for you to get a mail-in ballot), your assistant must fill out a document indicating his or her relationship to you, and that person will be Restricted as to the kind of Assistance he or she can provide.

EASTSIDER - Hat’s off to the Reseda Neighborhood Council for this one. Evidently, having botched the 2021 Neighborhood Council Elections, Raquel Beltran is back trying to grab another million dollars from the City budget for -- 2013 Neighborhood Council Elections! 

LAND USE IN LA - Cue the “Imperial March.” 

EASTSIDER - Since Kevin De Leon chose to make homelessness the centerpiece of his Mayoral campaign, it seems fair to see how that’s working out in his very own CD 14.

THE ENVIRONMENT - “Metro is beginning the environmental review phase for the Sepulveda Transit Corridor project, which will build a heavy rail line or monorail between the San Fernando Valley and the Westside.
