Marqueece Harris-Dawson has been a leader in the South L.A. community for more than 20 years leading important social justice campaigns aimed at improving the quality of life for all African American and Latino residents in the community. He was born in South LA and raised by two church leaders who taught him the value of service. After graduating from Morehouse College, he returned home to work in his family’s real estate business. Harris-Dawson has owned a home in the 8th District with his wife Karrie, for 18 years.
He became President and CEO of the Community Coalition in South LA in 2004 following years as a community organizer– leading some of the organization’s first major victories. Since taking the helm of the organization, he has doubled the budget and staff and purchased the organization’s building. His effective leadership has resulted in $153 million dollars for South LA schools; a reduced number of nuisance businesses in South LA neighborhoods; $80 million dollars for kinship families and resources to improve public spaces in the 8th District.
The decision to run for City Council reflects Harris-Dawson’s commitment to South LA and value of service.
