I apologize if this entry in DEALS AND DISCOUNTS sounds like a restaurant review, but I fell in love with Sunny Blue (photo) after my first bite of chicken curry omusubi. Sunny Blue is a small authentic Japanese restaurant on Main Street in Santa Monica selling omusubi, handcrafted rice balls with various fillings, known as omusubi or onigiri—as the Japanese equivalent of an American sandwich.
Sunny Blue sell thousands of omusubi each day for the past 3 years, and their success has led to the opening of a second location in Culver City. Just ask check out their rating on yelp.com. It has 766 reviews and an almost perfect 4 1/2 star rating....so what is the craze?
An omusubi consists a triangular scoop of white or brown rice of a crispy nori or seaweed wrapping. The filling is tailored to your taste buds with options of beef with miso sauce, curry chicken, spicy salmon, Japanese pickles with wasabi, tuna, shiso ume or king oyster mushroom king oyster, eggplant or cod, with a generous sprinkle of Kewpie mayo and sesame seeds on top. Not only are all the ingredients extremely fresh, but the most items are gluten-free.
With the low price of each omusubi ranging from $3.15 to $4.95, you can order two balls to satisfy your hunger still an inexpensive, yet filling meal. There are so many great varieties of fillings to choose, I usually order 3 omusubi because I can never decide.
For dessert, help yourself to unique yogurt flavors with “house” toppings like yuzu (Japanese citrus), red beans, mochi, and of course Pocky sticks.
The complementary barley tea is free on tap, just another perk of dining at this hidden gem among other unique beverages to choose from.
I love to bring my out-of-town guests to experience Sunny Blue. The food is unique, inexpensive authentic Japanese, unique, healthy and DELICIOUS!!!!
