As colleges face heightened scrutiny over their handling of campus rape, the U.S. Senate could help significantly reduce sexual assault and intimate partner violence in schools across America.
Senators Tim Kaine (D-Va.) and Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) have introduced the Teach Safe Relationships Act, which would add age-appropriate lessons about topics like consent and intimate partner violence to comprehensive health classes for high school students (1).
Young people shouldn't have to wait to arrive at college to learn about consent and healthy, respectful intimate relationships. Those topics should be included with the crucial information about STIs and pregnancy teenagers are already learning in high school.
