$10 for 2 Tempranillos or $4 for 2 Mad Dogs—Your Choice

ARCHIVE

A couple weeks ago, super booze dealer, Bev Mo, opened a new store at Beverly and La Cienega. This one’s got 8400 square feet of assorted wines, beers and spirits, along with a bevy of gourmet foods. So, are there good deals to be had at Bev Mo? This question requires a sober analysis of the facts.

First item: Right now, as we speak, Bev Mo is having what they call a Five-Cent Wine Sale. Wow. That is totally great, right? Wine for Five Cents! Even the Ninety-Nine-Cent wine at the 99 (Per)Cent store can’t beat that!

Not so fast. You might think to yourself that you can just waltz in there and get a few bottles of wine for five cents each, right? No. This kind of bonanza is strictly for the banks. For us commoners, the devil is in the details. What we have here is really your basic two-for one sale. Nothing wrong with that. You buy one bottle of wine, you get the second one for five cents. You pay full price for the most expensive bottle. So, the value of the deal really depends on how good the first bottle is and how much it costs.

At this point, you might be wondering if you can score a couple of bottles of Mad Dog 20/20 for about 4 bucks right? You can, but not at Bev Mo. They don’t stock it. They also don’t stock Night Train, in case you’re wondering.

You can get Mad Dog in several flavors down at Trojan Liquor by USC for $3.99 plus tax. I hope those frat boys over there aren’t using this stuff for butt-chugging cocktail parties like their brethren over at the University of Tennessee. I heard about this practice last night on Anderson Cooper’s RidicuList show. I guess it kind of puts a new spin on the meaning of a “social drinker.”

Anyway, I digress. It’s important to note that not every bottle of wine at Bev Mo is included in the Five-Cent Sale. Some wines are always on the offer for a low price. For example, they have a nice sized jug of Carlo Rossi Red Sangria that’s not part of the sale but goes for a mere $5.99.

Most of the Five-Cent wines range from $13.00 to $30.00; however, I did find some as low at $10. Along with some US wines, they have plenty of labels from other countries. They’ve got some lovely Spanish Tempranillos, Malbecs from Argentina, and Chiantis from Italy.

Second item: You must be a member of ClubBev card to get this discount. Wow. Trojan Liquor is beginning to look better. It seems to me there used to be a charge for the BeMo Club but NO MORE! YAY! You can do it all online, which I would suggest. That way, after you’ve agonized over your Five-Cent deals, you won’t have to sign up for ClubBev at the checkout stand.

By the way, while you’re at it, you can go ahead and make your order online if you want. Then, you can go by the store of your choice and pick up your loot – a handy feature.

So, there you have it folks. You have a choice here. At Bev Mo’s Five-Cent Wine Sale, you can get a couple bottles of Spanish Tempranillo for $10.00; or you can grab a couple bottles of Mad Dog at Trojan Liquor for $3.99.
